Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has reaffirmed his commitment to honoring the uniqueness of twins in the state, with a bold vision to elevate the Igbo Ora Festival of Twins and Multiple Births to UNESCO World Heritage status.

He made this declaration during the annual World Twins Festival, themed “Twinning for Love, Unity, and National Economic Reorientation,” held at Methodist Grammar School, Igbo-Ora.

The festival, organized by the Igbo-Ora Community Foundation, in collaboration with the Ibarapa Central Local Government, the Oyo State Government, and Twins World Creation Intercontinental, attracted visitors from across the globe, showcasing the cultural significance of twins in the region, often referred to as the ‘Land of Twins.’

Speaking on behalf of the governor, Deputy Governor Bayo Lawal lauded the event, stating, “What we are celebrating today is truly remarkable.”

He encouraged the community to continue cherishing the unique blessing of twins, emphasizing that Igbo-Ora’s extraordinary frequency of multiple births is a cultural treasure.

“It’s the same food they eat here as in other places, but something special in Ibarapaland leads to this abundance of multiple births,” he explained.

He further revealed plans to boost the festival to meet UNESCO standards, with the hope of attracting global participation.

“This effort is ongoing, and we intend to welcome visitors from America, Asia, and beyond,” the governor assured.

Governor Makinde also urged the community to establish a permanent venue for the festival, ensuring it remains a landmark cultural event for generations to come.

“Part of what will enhance the vibrancy of this festival is good roads leading to the venue, making it easier for guests to enjoy the experience,” he added, promising the speedy completion of the Ido-Eruwa Road rehabilitation project.

Echoing similar sentiments, Dr. Wasiu Olatunbosun, the state’s Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, highlighted the festival’s growing influence. “This event has enhanced the promotion of culture and tourism in Oyo State,” he said, revealing the festival’s ambition to enter the Guinness Book of World Records and secure recognition from UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage.

The Olu of Igbo-Ora, Oba Jimoh Titiloye, expressed his appreciation to Governor Makinde for transforming the festival into a platform for tourism and economic growth. He emphasized the importance of the festival in showcasing Igbo-Ora’s cultural heritage and its potential to draw international attention.
