

Award-winning broadcast journalist and thespian, Ola Awakan, was recently honoured with the prestigious Eso Asa (Guardian of Culture) award by Lead City University at the vibrant Omoge Asa 2.0 celebration, hosted by the institution’s Faculty of Arts. The convener, Professor Anjola Robbin, said the distinguished honour recognizes Awakan’s unwavering commitment to promoting, preserving, and documenting Nigerian culture through theatre, storytelling, and media.
The star-studded event, which took place at Lead City University campus in Ibadan brought together an eclectic mix of culture custodians, art lovers, filmmakers, traditional rulers, and performers in a colourful celebration of Nigerian heritage.


More so, Awakan was one of several esteemed recipients of the Eso Asa title. Other honourees included Femi Adebayo, renowned Nollywood actor and cultural ambassador; Kunle Afolayan, veteran filmmaker, producer and director; Wale Adenuga Jnr, MD of Wale Adenuga Productions; and Prof. Kabiru A. Adejumo, Vice Chancellor of Lead City University.
During his remark, Ola Awakan said, revisiting the Omoluabi tenets is a viable solution towards the various socio-economic challenges confronting the nation. He lauded the institution for creating such a commendable programme for cultural reawakening and appraisal.
The vening was a cultural masterpiece as several traditional personalities as well as arts and culture veterans graced the event. The Olubadan of Ibadanland was ably represented, while high-profile attendees included Chief Lekan Alabi, Olori Aderonke Ademiluyi Ogunwusi, veteran actress and filmmaker Madam Jaiye Kuti, and Chief Mrs. Toyin Adegbola a.k.a Yeyetoyin Tomato, Olalekan Fabilola Masoyinbo and other art and education leaders also attended the event.


Guests were treated to a range of exhilarating performances from the Ekiti State cultural Troupe’s drum ensemble, to a vibrant showcase by the Ibadan Troupe, and a series of colourful acts from Lead City University’s art students.
The highlight of the night was the Omoge Asa Walkway Parade, a cultural fashion parade that celebrated the beauty, elegance, and depth of Nigeria’s diverse traditions.
Ola Awakan’s recognition as Eso Asa is a testament to his impactful storytelling, commitment to cultural preservation, and his inspiring influence in both media and theatre. As a mentor and creative force, his journey continues to motivate the next generation of culture enthusiasts.
