I SPEAK WITH STONES – Oladapo Afolayan
By Keshinro Omotola
A renowned stone sculptor in Nigeria has revealed the significance of stones for nation building and the need for government to invest heavily in stone sculpting.
Sculptor Oladapo Afolayan, a lecturer at the Auchi Polytechnic organised the first stone art exhibition at the National Museum in Lagos and his works wowed the art lovers who thronged the rendezvous. In a significant shift from his traditional stone carving, Oladapo Afolayan, a celebrated artist in Nigeria, is redefining his craft to convey profound messages about life and faith. Afolayan, who has long been celebrated for his traditional sculptures that honour cultural heritage, is now using his art to explore deeper themes of spirituality and existence.
Historically, stone sculptures in Africa have served to honour influential figures and preserve cultural narratives. Afolayan’s recent work blends this rich tradition with contemporary themes, illustrating art’s transformative power and its capacity for spiritual and social commentary.
While explaining how he has mastered the act of having dialogue with his stones, he said, “My art has always been a reflection of my surroundings and beliefs. By incorporating messages of life and Christ, I aim to evoke deeper reflections and inspire conversations about faith and existence”.
Art scholars perspectives on Afolayan’s work emphasize its dual impact. According to
Frank A. O. Ugiomoh,
“Afolayan’s latest work not only demonstrates his technical mastery but also reflects the evolving role of art in society. His sculptures invite viewers to engage with significant themes and provoke thoughtful dialogue”
Oguguo Igwe, an art enthusiast from Imo State based in London was among those who saw the stone arts on his visit to Lagos. He expressed his admiration for Afolayan’s pieces, noting, “I truly appreciate the uniqueness of these artworks. They convey deep emotions and offer a distinctive experience.”
These Lawyers, Cynthia Chukwu and Ezekiel Nkechi both highlighted the visual appeal of Afolayan’s work. “The colours incorporated into the sculptures are striking and drew our attention immediately. They enhance the overall impact of the art,” they remarked.
Afolayan’s evolution in his artistic approach demonstrates how art can transcend its physical form to deliver impactful messages. His sculptures, rich with both aesthetic and intellectual depth, highlight the dynamic interplay between tradition and modernity.
As Afolayan continues to explore new artistic horizons, his work reaffirms art’s potential to both inspire and challenge. His integration of traditional techniques with contemporary themes offers viewers a unique experience, merging visual appeal with reflective engagement.
The solo exhibition has entered history as the first ever Stone Art at the National Museum in Lagos.
