In an array of what can be regarded as a colourful and vibrant display of cultural heritage and appreciation, the graduating class of 2023 from the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Ondo State (FUTA) brought the spirit of Ojude Oba to their campus with the #OjudeFUTA celebration. The iconic event was inspired by the annual culturally rich Ojude Oba festival celebrated by the Ijebu people in the southwestern part of Nigeria.
The Ojude Oba festival, which loosely translates to “The Kings Forecourt” is one of the most popular cultural festivals in southwest Nigeria. It is a grand event that celebrates the Yoruba rich cultural heritage featuring fashion, music, dance, horseback riding and many more attracting tourists across the country and global society.
Due to its influence and prestige, it has become a major symbol of tourism, cultural preservation and community development in the country.
It is no surprise that the graduating set who tagged themselves as “The Conquistadors” drew inspiration from Ojude Oba to celebrate the end of their educational journey in the institution and appraise their cultural heritage.
Apart from rocking colourful traditional attires, and hairstyles and connecting back to their traditional roots, #OjudeFuta is a testament that cultural appreciation has the power to bring people together and promote oneness and unity irrespective of clan, tribe, belief, and class.
OjudeFuta can be regarded as a resounding success because it displayed the culture and traditions, showing that it can still thrive alongside the already modernized society.
