DISCUSSIONS TO GROW AFRICA TAKE CENTRE STAGE AT BLACK CONSCIOUSNESS FESTIVAL

At the maiden Black Consciousness Festival to commemorate the pride, power and practice of people of African descent all over the world, discussions have been centered on the growth and development of the African culture and people.

The festival being coordinated from Trinidad and Tobago and beamed online due to restrictions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic encompasses 20 conversations for 2020, running from the 1st of November through 20th.

While speaking on ‘The Social State of Africa,” prominent Nigerian broadcaat journalist, Mike Okwoche alongside his discussants Bukola Samuel-Wemimo and Dr Kenneth Ombongi spoke extensively on Africa’s history of underdevelopment as well as measures towards responsible government.

Furthermore, Janelle Penny Commissiong, Sheryland Neal and Helder Dias of the HDA Agency were joined by the global online audience as they spoke on their experiences with racism while talking on “Being Black in the Beauty Industry.”
Neal explained that it was her desire to return home as an African-American woman that led her to competing to be the Carnival queen of the legendary Afro-Bloco Ile Aiye in Brazil, 2018.

Also present at the event were the Festival’s team led by Festival Director Erica Ashton, activist Nadella Oya (Creative Strategy and Programming Director), Heather Mac Intosh-Simon (Partnership and Sponsorship Director), and Sean Samad (Content and Communications Director).

The festival is streamed across all major platforms online and all the event videos are posted to the festival’s YouTube channel and website. Registration for the festival is free and open to all.
